Our humanitarian
volunteer projects in Nepal are focused on
HEALTHCARE AND ON MENTORING CHILDREN.
Dental Projects
Our healthcare projects are focused on operating dental clinics to serve
to the neediest children and families of the region. You don't have
to be a Dentist to volunteer on one of these projects (see the non-medical
job description under Volunteer Job Descriptions)! Group volunteer projects
provide a combination of volunteering in a stationary or mobile dental
clinic setting along with the opportunity to trek or sightsee in various
parts of the country.
Projects in Nepal generally last 2 to
3 weeks, which includes 7 days working in the dental clinic, travel
time to/from the clinic site and some time for sightseeing at the end
of the project. Volunteers may choose to stay longer and continue their
volunteer work after the group volunteer project terminates. Contact
Us for further information on extending your volunteer program or to
learn more about extended stay volunteer opportunities.
Group Volunteer Opportunities for Dental Projects
Group volunteer dental projects to Nepal depart thrice annually, in
the fall and spring. The following types of volunteers are accepted
for group dental projects in Nepal: Dentists / Dental Hygienists / Non-Medical
Volunteers (without degree or previous experience in dentistry). Contact
Us for detailed itineraries and project fees. See Dates for departures
dates for our Nepal projects.
Project Location and Setting
Clinics are held in urban locations such as Kathmandu and in remote
villages. Clinics are of two distinct types -- mobile field and permanent
hospital clinics -- as described below.
Field Clinics
Most field clinics are held at schools adopted for long term care by
our partners in Nepal, The Himalayan Dental Relief Project. These clinics
include schools in urban areas and in remote village locations. In these
clinics, children are fully charted and care is provided to restore
primarily permanent teeth. Long term follow up care is provided on a
1-3 year basis. In remote locations, clinics usually include one day
of care to provide relief for adults in pain.
Hospital Clinics
Global Humanitarian Expeditions and The Himalayan Dental Relief are
affiliated with the Shechen Clinic in Kathmandu, Nepal, a charity clinic
built to serve impoverished populations without access to dental or
medical care. In this location, volunteer dentists work in partnership
with resident Nepali dentists to meet the huge demand for treatment.
Working conditions are excellent. Dentists work in operatories that
include modern dental chairs, full operatory and sterilization function,
x-ray capabilities, and limited lab facilities. Local dental assistants
work chairside and provide translation assistance.
In this clinic patients are of all ages and backgrounds, typically paying
for care on a sliding scale, depending upon ability to pay. All fees
collected by the Shechen Clinic are used to support the operation of
the Shechen Charity Clinic.
Mentoring Projects - Share
With Kids Program
Join this pioneer event to connect volunteers with Nepalese children
in need. Over the course of one week, volunteers will work with children
on a one-on-one basis in a school setting and out on field trips in
the city of Kathmandu. Volunteers will be working with children of Shree
Mangal Dvip Boarding School, founded to meet the needs of children from
remote Himalayan regions. Many children rarely leave the confines of
their school, so this is a very special time for them. The experience
culminates with an overnight excursion to a mountain hill station with
magnificent views of the Himalayas.
Afterward, volunteers will continue
their journey in Nepal with a 6-day trek up to Tengboche(14,000ft),
along the trail to Mt. Everest. Tengboche offers stunning views of Mt.
Everest and surrounding peaks. Alternatively, a cultural tour of the
highlights of Nepal may be arranged.

Projects
Group volunteer mentoring projects to Nepal depart twice annually, in
the fall and spring. Volunteers are accepted through an application
process on a space available basis. There are no requirements in order
to volunteer. The most important quality a volunteer can have is flexibility
and a willingness to serve the community. Contact Us for detailed itineraries
and project fees. See Dates for departures dates of our Nepal projects.
